When I was a lad of 17, I went off to college from a state (Michigan) where the drinking age was 21 years, to a state (New York) where it was 18. (A national drinking age of 21 was not established until 1984). One of my first official academic acts was to go to Theodore Zinck's, a local bar, and get totally drunk (for the first time) on sloe gin fizzes.
